The Council has a responsibility under the Building Act 1984 to carry out remedial action to deal with any structure, public or privately owned, that is judged to be in a dangerous condition.
This is to protect the public's health and safety and particularly applies to buildings which are derelict or damaged beyond economic repair and have become unstable or dangerous either through accidental damage or neglect or proper maintenance.
If the building or structure poses a potential danger to people's safety, we take the appropriate action to remove the danger. We have legal powers to require the owners of buildings or structures to remedy the defects or we can direct our contractors to carry out works to make buildings or structures safe.
Emergency Teams:
In order to respond immediately outside of normal working hours, an emergency team of experienced building surveyors are on call. They will inspect the building and help the owner of the building decide on the best course of action required to protect the safety of the public. This may vary from closing a street to instructing the immediate demolition of the property, or helping the owner find a builder to make the property safe.
Dangerous Structure Contacts:
If you need to report a dangerous structure, contact us between 8.45 am and 5.15 pm on 01322 343434 or outside of these hours call Dartford Borough Council out of hours service on 0345 6341212.
