Become a walk leader
Dartford Health Walk Leaders:
We are keen to expand the Dartford Health Walk programme and we need committed volunteers who are willing to give up some of their time to help lead these walks. Whether that is on a weekly, fortnightly or monthly basis - it doesn't matter which - it all helps.
What does being a Walk Leader involve:
Each Health Walk has a Leader and a Back Marker, so you can choose whether you would like to lead the route or stay at the back and make sure no-one gets left behind. Many people start off as Back Markers and then become Leaders as their confidence improves.
Walk Leaders need to make sure that everyone signs the register for each walk, and that new walkers complete the Health Questionnaire. During the walk they need to make sure that walkers are safe and happy. Walk Leaders can set up their own walks and choose their own routes or we can supply routes for you.
How do I become a Walk Leader?
To become a Walk Leader or Back Marker you must attend the Walking for Health (WfH) 1-day training course (6 hours), which we provide free of charge.
During the day you will:
- Learn about the benefits of and barrier to walking.
- Understand the practical issues related to walking such as intensity, frequency, posture and clothing.
- Find out about the structure of a health walk and how to lead a walking session.
- Identify potential hazards you may face on a walk.
Next Steps:
If you would like to become one of our volunteer Walk Leaders, please contact the Health Team.
