Refuse Information
Within the borough, each property is permitted to have one 180L green refuse bin, which is emptied weekly. If you live in a property that has no room for a bin, we will collect up to three black sacks.
Properties are not permitted larger or extra containers unless this has been agreed in writing by the council.
We do not collect any side or excess waste presented on top or next to the refuse bin. Only waste that fits within the wheeled bin when the lid is completely closed will be collected. Additional waste that exceeds the size of the bin will not be collected but instead needs to be placed in the resident’s bin for the next scheduled collection.
If you are moving house you will need to check whether the previous occupier is leaving their bins. If your property does not have the correct containers when moving in, you will need to purchase a new refuse bin.
The green bin is for household waste that cannot be recycled, most common items are:
- Food waste
- Nappies and sanitary products
- Pet litter
- Polystyrene
- Bubble wrap
- Plastic bags and film e.g. plastic carrier bags, plastic film, salad bags, bread bags
- Crisp packets and sweet wrappers
- Tissues and used paper towels
- Cling Film
- Laminated plastic food/drink pouches such as baby food pouches, cat food pouches, coffee pouches
- Paper or card that is stained or dirty with foodstuffs, grease, paint or dirt like pizza boxes
- Glitter covered greetings cards or foil-based wrapping paper
- Glass cookware, glasses etc. (securely wrapped)
- Small amount of cold ash
Please do not put in your green bin and take these to one of Kent County Councils Household Waste Recycling Centres:
- DIY or building waste, such as rubble, wood or plasterboard
- Garden Waste
- Textiles
- Medical Waste, including syringes and stoma bags
- Small electrical appliances
- Hazardous Waste
- Commercial Waste
- Metal containers for chemicals (i.e. white spirits, paints, etc..) engine oils or other chemicals
- Light bulbs or fluorescent tubes
- Batteries
- Window glass or mirrors
- Bulky Items
- Items heavier than 15kg
