What are we proposing?

We’re strengthening the pedestrianisation of the High Street and reducing the inappropriate use by vehicles as far as possible. This will require better regulation and enforcement to create a safer, healthier, and more enjoyable High Street.

Explore the ideas on the following page or read on for more details on our proposals.

The key aims of our proposals are:

  • Managing motor traffic in High Street and Lowfield Street (north of Market Street). This would include new Traffic Regulation Orders (TRO) and collaborating with Kent County Council to potentially implement Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras.
  • The installation of bollards at entrances to High Street. These will allow access to authorised vehicles at certain times, while ensuring the High Street can be closed to secure the area.
  • Creating space for ‘streateries’ (areas in the High Street for businesses to use for outside seating).
  • These measures will also create the opportunity to expand our programme of events and cultural activities, bringing together Dartford’s proud communities to celebrate the things that we love about the town. We will continue to work with residents, cultural organisations, businesses, and other stakeholders to make the best use of the entertainment space.
  • We’re suggesting authorised vehicles only move in one direction on the High Street. The High Street entrance to the pedestrianised area at the junctions with Market Street would be the sole entrance, with exits available via Hythe Street and Lowfield Street, which are already one-way
  • There will be no entry to or from Market Place as units here will be either serviced from the High Street or from Market Street loading bays as they currently are (except for Iceland, which will continue to be accessed from Market Street).
